This past Friday my husband and I celebrated our 6 year wedding anniversary. We spent the day together and visited three different places. We had a lot of fun and got to see more of what Kansas City has to offer. Our first stop was Succotash for breakfast before heading to the Powell Gardens in Kingsville, MO. We ended the day by checking out the First Friday event in the Crossroads District of downtown Kansas City.
Succotash
Succotash was actually featured on an episode of Diner’s, Drive-ins, and Dives. It’s a breakfast and lunch joint with vegan and gluten-free options. I had the vegan sink with home fries. The vegan sink is their take on veggie scramble it has lima bean hummus, succotash, peppers, spinach, onions, & portabella mushrooms on home fries topped with fresh tomato. I really liked their lima bean hummus. Next time I visit I wanna try their vegan pancakes.
The restaurant has a quirky vibe with chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, graffiti on the walls, and some interesting photos. Dining at Succotash was a great experience the food was delicious and the atmosphere was chill and laid back. I think I found my new favorite breakfast and lunch spot.
Powell Gardens
Powell Gardens in Kingsville, Mo is about 30 miles east of Kansas City. It is a botanical garden that sits on 970 acres and features unique architectures. Such as a 12-acre lake, rock and waterfall garden, and a wildflower meadow. They also have an exhibit running called The Big Backyard. Where you can explore an oversized world of everyday backyard items objects. Some of the items featured were patio chairs, watering can, and a birdhouse.
It is absolutely beautiful and I wish we could have visited a bit longer but with the heat, we only were there for about an hour and a half. Since we went on a Friday morning there was hardly any people walking the Garden’s so it was very peaceful. We ended up purchasing a membership. This means that we can visit as many times as we like until September of 2019 and attend all the events free of charge. I can’t wait to visit in the fall and winter and see how the gardens change.
Crossroad’s First Friday
On the First Friday of every month, the sidewalks fill with residents and visitors of the Crossroads. Enjoying what has become one of the city’s most popular recurring events. The event runs from 5 to 9 p.m. and has a variety of local businesses, arts organizations, galleries, and studios. Who feature both local and national artists as well as live entertainment.
It was my first time attending the and there were a lot more people than I expected. They had a variety of food trucks and I was even able to find a vegan BBQ stand called the Peaceful Pig. I tried their woodsmoked jackfruit sandwich and homemade coleslaw. It was delicious and I can’t wait to try more of what they have to offer. We walked around for about two hours and only covered a small section of what the event had to offer. If your thinking about attending make sure you get there early so that you can find a parking spot and avoid the long lines for the food trucks. There is a parking garage located across the street from the convention center but is about a ten to fifteen-minute walk to the event.
Later on, I plan on visiting all the places that I visited this past Friday again. Hopefully, the weather starts to cool down soon so I can spend a bit more time outside. It was in the upper 90s but, it felt way hotter. I made sure to bring my water bottle with me so that I could stay hydrated.
