Hobbies and Mental Health: Finding What You Enjoy

The mental health benefits of hobbies go far beyond simply having something to do in your free time. Hobbies can give us a break from responsibilities, help reduce stress, encourage creativity, build confidence, and give us an opportunity to reconnect with ourselves.

But what happens when you don’t have a hobby?

Maybe you used to draw, read, play video games, bake, build things, play an instrument, take photographs, or spend hours outside. Then life happened. Work, responsibilities, relationships, and everyday stress slowly took up more of your time.

Let’s break them down in a way that doesn’t make you feel like a failure before you even start.

We’re taught to measure productivity by checklists, deadlines, and how much we can squeeze into a single day. But here’s the thing: sometimes the most productive thing you can do is nothing at all.

Lazy days aren’t a failure. They’re fuel.

Productivity Tips for Brains That Don’t Do Productivity

If you’ve ever bought a planner, filled it with color-coded goals, and then promptly ignored it for three months—you are not alone.

Traditional productivity advice assumes everyone’s brain works the same way. Spoiler: they don’t. If you’ve got ADHD, anxiety, depression, or just a brain that resists structure, the usual hacks (“wake up at 5 a.m.! block your time!”) can feel impossible.

Here are the productivity tips that finally worked for me—no 5 a.m. wake-up required.

How to Navigate Friendships When You’re the “Flaky One”

Let’s be honest: sometimes I’m the flaky friend. Not because I don’t care, but because my brain and body don’t always cooperate with the calendar.

Maybe anxiety shows up the morning of. Maybe depression glues me to the couch. Maybe I just forgot because executive dysfunction is real. Whatever the reason, I’ve had to figure out how to be a good friend and honor my limits.

If you’ve ever felt like the “flaky one,” here are some ways to keep friendships strong without pretending you’re someone you’re not.
