August was a month of ups and downs. I went to Second Saturdays and got to try a delicious new plant-based restaurant and some new items of one of my favorite food trucks. But, sadly I had to say goodbye to the trees in my backyard. Even though August had its ups and downs, I was able to get all my cosplays but one for Dragon Con. So, here’s a wrap-up of my August and what I have planned for September.
Second Saturday
Second Saturday is a new monthly event hosted by Veg Life KC the same group that host the Kansas City Veg Fest. It’s a vegan gathering much like Veg Fest and is on the Second Saturday of each month. It’s a new event, and they held their first gathering last month. When I saw it on their Facebook page, I was excited that there was a new vegan event to check out. It’s in an area that I’m not familiar with, so I left early for the event so I could do some exploring before it started. I ended up going to a vegan cafe called the Happy Apple Cafe that I’ve been wanted to check out. I saw there stand at Veg Fest but was full and didn’t get a chance to try their food. So I added them to my list of vegan restaurants to check out
Happy Apple Cafe
When I opened the map app on my phone, I saw that that the Happy Apple Cafe was less than 10 minutes away. And, since I skipped breakfast, I decided to go there for an early lunch. And I’m so glad I did because their food was amazing. The owners were kind and you could tell that they had a passion for cooking and art. It’s a cozy little cafe with walls full of art from local artists. When you walk in it feels like your being welcomed into someone’s home for a good meal.
After admiring the atmosphere I ordered a sandwich with a side of fries. And, it was out of this world. Each ingredient was carefully chosen, because of that everything, paired well together and took it from being a boring old sandwich to a celebration on flavor. One of the owners brought out a pear aioli sauce that was the perfect combination of sweet and savory. And something I would smear on everything. Their menu changes daily, and they’re open Tuesday to Friday from 11 am to 3pn. So, if you live in the Kansas City area, or you’re just visiting I’d recommend stopping by and checking them out for yourself. You won’t be sorry.
Mattie’s Vegan Eats
After enjoying my visit to Happy Apple Cafe, I made my way to Second Saturday. I walked around the event for a little while before getting in line for one of my favorite food trucksMattie’s Vegan Eats. They had recently added to their menu, and I was super excited to try some of the new items. I ordered a BBQ chic sandwich, pasta salad, vegan mac & cheese, and banana pudding cake. Everything was delicious and I was doing a little dance the whole time I was eating. It all paired well with one another and the vegan mac & cheese was some of the best I’ve ever had.
Goodbye Trees
In August, my area was hit by a severe thunderstorm, and it damaged all 5 of the trees in my backyard. So, I contacted a tree removal service to see what could be done to save the trees. Unfortunately, they were badly damaged and couldn’t be saved. So, all the trees in my backyard had to be removed. I was heartbroken that I had to say goodbye to my beautiful willow tree, ash trees, and my pear tree. They brought me shade on hot summer days, and the pear tree provided food for the wildlife that visited. I’m going to miss them, and it’s weird looking out the window and not seeing them there. But, in the spring I’ll pick out some new trees to nurture and watch them grow.
Raod to Dragon Con
Well, at the time of me writing this there is 12 days left to Dragon Con. I had to swap out my Isabelle for Chuckie Finster because I was having issues with the vest, so I decided to put it on hold. And, make it apart of my Youman Con line up instead. That’s not until October, so that gives me plenty of time to fix the vest. So my new line up for Dragon Con is Jane Lane, Chuckie Finster, Velma, and casual Snow White, and Uhura. I’ll post a recap of Dragon after I get back home and settled, so stay tuned for that.
September Plans

It’s too bad about all of the trees in your backyard. At least you will be able to plant some new ones next year. Those restaurants sound great and the food looks delicious. One of these days I want to attend a con, I’m not even sure which one I would go to, I just want to attend one.
Thank you, my backyard looks so weird now, but on the plus side, I don’t have to rake and leaves this fall. I’ve been doing some research on what type of trees thrive in my area, but havent picked out any new ones yet. Conventions are a lot of fun, and there are lots to choose from depending on your interest. My personal favorites are multi-genre cons because you get a little bit of everything.
