January wrap-up: how I started 2020

I spent the last few weeks of 2019 with the flu. But, while I was sick in bed I had a lot of time to do some reflecting on the year. After opening my journal to a blank page, I wrote about what I liked from the past year and what I didn’t like. Once I reflected on those things, I then thought and wrote about the changes I could make to have an even better year. So here are a few of the changes I made for 2020, how my January went, as well as my February goals.

New Workout Schedule

Now I love going to the gym and working out but going five days a week was taking a massive toll on my body. I would wake up early tired and exhausted with knee pains and lower back pains. Then pop a pain reliever and power through another workout. Then by the time, the weekend would roll around, I would spend sore and icing my achy muscles. So for 2020, I’ll be waking up early and working out that the gym Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. And on Tuesdays and Thursdays, I’ll be sleeping in and doing yoga at home.  I noticed a huge difference in how my body felt after the first week of the new workout schedule. There was no sore achy muscles, knee pains, and I felt less exhausted getting some extra sleep.

Downsizing

Owning a home comes with its ups and downs, but there have been more downs than ups for me. More than I can handle. So for 2020, I’ve decided to put my home on the market and downsize to an apartment. Maintaining a home for the past year has been too much for me handle. In the past year, I’ve had to replace the carpet, paint, replace the A/C and furnace, as well as remove all the trees from my backyard. Not to mention all the day to stuff like cleaning, lawn care, and shoveling stuff. Trying to manage everything left me stressed out with very little free time. So, I’ll be putting my house up for sale and moving into an apartment. There are some things I’ll miss about owning a home, but I know the change will be better for my overall mental health.

Schedule time off

I’m constantly guilty of overfilling my schedule. So another change I’m making for the new year is scheduling time off. On Sundays or Mondays, I take my planner and plan out my week. I would fill each day with something and by the middle of the week, I’d be exhausted from constantly doing something. So for 2020, I’m changing that by adding time off to my weekly schedule. I’ve been able to squeeze some time off at least once a week, and it’s been helping to reduce my overall stress. One of the things I did during my time off is went and saw Cirque du Soleil: Axel.

What I did in January: Cirque du Soleil: Axel

Last year I saw Cirque du Soleil: Crystal and this year I was able to see Cirque du Soleil: Axel. Their second ice-skating themed show. I was able to get my ticket at a discount due to a cyber Monday deal. It was between this show and a concert, but I thought I would have more fun at Cirque Du Soleil show by myself instead of a concert. And the show was slightly cheaper than the concert.

It follows a young man named Axel and his group of friends. He falls for the mysterious new girl name Lei. But Vi shows up, a mystical force that feeds on fear who steals a literal and metaphorical light from Lei. Then Axel and his friends band together to fight against Vi to get Let’s light back. It’s a high energy show with dazzling visuals, figure skating, and lasers.

Axel was like a comic book coming to life. I was on the edge of my seat the whole show, and I didn’t want it to end. It was just as great as their first show, and I hope that they keep creating ice-skating themed shows.

February Goals

My goals for February are:

  • Finish moving into my new apartment.
  • Have an awesome solo Valentine’s day that involves eating cake and watching awful romantic comedies.
  • Find a new job.
  • Not get sick, again.

Overall the start of my 2020 was good, and I’m hoping that I’ll be able to continue this momentum into February and accomplish the goals I’ve set for my self. How was your January and what goals do you have for February?
