Great Indie Games You Might Have Missed

It’s easy to miss out on great indie games when Triple-A games hog the spotlight. Through Platforms such as Steam, it has become easier for indie game developers to get their games noticed. Even with limited resources, small developers are still able to produce a quality experience for players. By putting lots of creativity into their games. Yet, there are some gamers who are unaware of some of the amazing indie games out there for less than the cost of a Triple-A game. So here are a few indie games that you might have missed out on.

Oxenfree

Oxenfree is a supernatural adventure game that is set around a group of friends taking part in the senior year tradition of sneaking into Edwards Island, an old military outpost. In the game, you play as Alex. She brings her new stepbrother to an overnight party that ends up going horribly wrong. The game takes the classic coming of age tale and sets it against a dangerous and eerie backdrop. The music also adds to the ghostly eerie feeling. It’s an easy game to play through and it tells the story without cutscenes. The game has multiple endings based on decisions made throughout your playthrough. So, if you’re in the mood for something creepy, eerie, and spooky this a game to check out.

Rime

Rime is a single-player puzzle adventure in which you explore a beautiful yet rugged world. You play as a nameless young boy who has awakened on an island after a storm. throughout your adventure, you’ll encounter wild animals, ruins, and a mysterious tower. With the guidance of a helpful fox, you’ll explore the island and reach the tower’s peak to unlock the secrets within. It’s a simple game that mainly focuses on puzzles and exploration. The soundtrack to the game is calming and soothing which makes playing the game a chill and relaxing experience. It’s not a fast-paced game, so if you are looking for something light this is definitely a game to check out.

Night In The Woods

Night in The Woods centers around Mae a college dropout returning home to Possum Springs to hang out with her friends and break stuff. When she returns home she realizes that nothing is the same. The town has changed, her friends have grown in their own directions, and Mae herself is undergoing some sudden unexplained changes.  It’s an adventure game heavily focused on the story, characters, and exploration. As you explore the town of Possum Springs and interact with other characters you’ll find yourself engaged and connected to their stories.  The game does deal with some intense themes like mental illness, abuse, and poverty. Overall it’s a relatable game and may leave you in tears at some points.

Transistor

Transistor is a sci-fi themed action RPG developed by Supergiant games. The developers behind Bastion and Pyre. In this game, you play as Red a famous singer in Cloud Bank City who wields a mysterious Transistor, a sword like a weapon. She comes in possession of the sword after a failed assassination attempt by a group called The Camerata. Throughout the game, you will fight your way through a futuristic city and piece together the Transistor’s mysteries as you pursue its former owner. The game has a post-cyberpunk aesthetic look to it with music to match.

Her Story

Her story is a game from Sam Barlow creator of Silent Hill: Shattered Memories and Aisle. It’s a crime fiction game with non-linear storytelling. It revolves around a police database full of live-action video footage. It stars actress and musician Viva Seifert. Your goal is to piece together what happened, and who might be responsible for the murder. It’s an interesting concept for a game and I recommend it if you’re looking for something different.

Detention

Detention is a horror game set in 1960s Taiwan under martial law. The game also incorporates religious elements from Taiwanese/Chinese mythology. It takes place at Greenwood high school and is located in a remote mountainous area. You play as Ray, a female student who finds herself trapped at school, and what once seemed familiar is now dark, eerie, and dangerous.  As you explore the campus you will encounter dangerous creatures as you solve puzzles to escape the island. It has an amazing art style that really adds to the eerie feeling of the game. It’s a deep story-driven game told through the environment, notes, and puzzles. With a beautiful soundtrack and terrifying imagery, this game will keep you on the edge of your seat. So if you’re a fan of foreign horror games, this is a game for you.

Indie games come in a variety of genres and offer storylines, characters, and gameplay. They lack the fudging triple-A studios have and often fly under the radar. So it’s easy to miss the release of indie games, but platforms have helped them grow in popularity and become readily available on different gaming platforms.
