KC Game On

Being someone who is new to the Kansas City area I’m always searching for things to do in the area. During one of my searches, I came across KC Game On. It is a not for profit group that host bi-monthly gaming events. It started off small but has grown over the years to include Kansas City’s premier gaming event KC Game Con. They offer free general admission to get people in the door so that they learn more about esports and understand the gaming culture. This past Saturday I visited KC Game Con and saw how much they had to offer to the Midwest gaming community. The KC Game Con had a lot to offer its guest.

Esports & Tournaments

Esports is playing video games competitively either as a single-player or on a team. And in the past few years, collegiate esports programs have become available. And Kansas City is at the epicenter of college and high school esports and is home to the National Association of Collegiate Esports (NACE). While I was at KC Game Con I learned that collegiate esports is growing with more and more schools becoming apart of NACE. And as a part of KC Game On’s dedication to pushing college esports, they hosted a collegiate only League of Legends tournament.

In addition to their collegiate tournament, they also included their bring your own computer tournament. With tournaments in Overwatch, Fortnite, Rocket League, and Player Unknown Battle Ground. They also had a bring your own console tournament in Super Smash Bros. for the Nintendo 64. A game I haven’t played since the ’90s. As a part of KC Game On’s effort to further their guest understanding of gaming culture.

For all Guest

Even if you didn’t compete in the tournaments there was still lots to do. You could check out the different vendors or play a free game of pinball. KC Game Con even had a cosplay competition judged by BB Cosplay, Legendary Rose, and Barley Cosplay. Along with a performance from the Love Live and Jpop dance cover group Shiny Dreamers. So even if competitive gaming wasn’t really your thing. There was still lots to explore. I enjoyed my time at KC Game Con and I’m looking forward to seeing what other events KC Game On will hold.

If you live in the Kansas City area and want to learn more about KC Game On, you can check out their website here.
