Book Review: What Happened to You?

October 14, 2026 by Angela Louise No Comments
Book Review: What Happened to You?

Some books leave you entertained for a few days.

Others stay in your brain long after you finish the final chapter because they completely change the way you understand people.

What Happened to You?: Conversations on Trauma, Resilience, and Healing by Oprah Winfrey and Bruce D. Perry is one of those books.

This isn’t just a book about trauma. It’s a book about human behavior, emotional survival, childhood experiences, relationships, and the invisible ways people learn to cope with difficult situations.

More importantly, it’s a book that replaces judgment with curiosity.

And honestly, I think that’s why so many readers connect with it.

Healthy Ways to Self-Regulate When Living With Mental Illness

Healthy Ways to Self-Regulate When Living With Mental Illness

Some days, managing your emotions can feel relatively easy. Other days, it can feel like your emotions have taken the steering wheel and you’re simply along for the ride.

Anxiety may leave you feeling overwhelmed. Sadness can make even simple tasks feel exhausting. Irritability might appear out of nowhere, while other moments may leave you feeling completely disconnected from what you’re experiencing.

When you’re living with mental illness, emotional regulation isn’t always as simple as someone telling you to “calm down” or “think positively.”

If it were that easy, we’d all be doing it.

Self-regulation is a skill, and like any skill, it takes practice. More importantly, it can look different from person to person and even from day to day.

Sometimes self-regulation means taking a few deep breaths. Other times, it might mean stepping away from an overwhelming situation, taking a shower, going for a walk, journaling, listening to music, or sitting somewhere quiet.

There may also be moments when the healthiest thing you can do is admit:

“I’m struggling right now, and I need support.”

Self-regulation isn’t about making difficult emotions disappear. Instead, it’s about learning how to move through them without allowing them to completely control your thoughts, actions, or decisions.

From Defense Mechanisms to Healthy Coping: Why We Protect Ourselves

From Defense Mechanisms to Healthy Coping: Why We Protect Ourselves

Sometimes the way we respond to difficult situations isn’t really about what’s happening in the moment.

Maybe someone gives you constructive criticism, and you immediately become defensive.

Maybe someone hurts your feelings, but instead of admitting you’re hurt, you become angry.

Maybe you avoid a difficult conversation because you tell yourself, “It’s not worth it.”

Maybe you make a joke whenever something gets too uncomfortable.

Or perhaps when life feels overwhelming, you shut down completely and distance yourself from everyone around you.

These reactions can sometimes leave us wondering, “Why do I do this?”

The truth is, many of these responses can be connected to something called defense mechanisms.

Defense mechanisms aren’t necessarily bad. In fact, they often develop for a reason. They are ways our minds try to protect us from emotional discomfort, fear, rejection, shame, pain, or experiences that feel too overwhelming to process.

The problem isn’t always having defenses.

The problem is when those defenses become our automatic way of dealing with everything.

Learning to recognize them can give us an opportunity to move from simply protecting ourselves to coping in healthier ways.

Below the Line: How to Get Back Above the Line

Below the Line: How to Get Back Above the Line

There are days when everything feels harder than it should.

A small inconvenience becomes the thing that finally breaks you. A harmless comment feels personal. Your patience disappears. You start catastrophizing, shutting down, snapping at people, or convincing yourself that everything is going wrong.

You’re not necessarily having a bad life.

You’re having a below-the-line moment.

And honestly? We all have them.

The goal isn’t to never go below the line. That’s impossible. The goal is learning to recognize when you’ve crossed it—and knowing how to find your way back.

Inspired by “Bleeding Part of Me” by Paris Paloma — a piece about the kind of love that keeps you on the battlefield, mistaking pain for intimacy and survival for healing.

Sometimes, the hardest question isn’t whether you love someone… it’s whether the hurt has become part of how you love them.

Can love save you if you’re both drowning? 🖤
