Healthy Ways to Self-Regulate When Living With Mental Illness

Healthy Ways to Self-Regulate When Living With Mental Illness

Some days, managing your emotions can feel relatively easy. Other days, it can feel like your emotions have taken the steering wheel and you’re simply along for the ride.

Anxiety may leave you feeling overwhelmed. Sadness can make even simple tasks feel exhausting. Irritability might appear out of nowhere, while other moments may leave you feeling completely disconnected from what you’re experiencing.

When you’re living with mental illness, emotional regulation isn’t always as simple as someone telling you to “calm down” or “think positively.”

If it were that easy, we’d all be doing it.

Self-regulation is a skill, and like any skill, it takes practice. More importantly, it can look different from person to person and even from day to day.

Sometimes self-regulation means taking a few deep breaths. Other times, it might mean stepping away from an overwhelming situation, taking a shower, going for a walk, journaling, listening to music, or sitting somewhere quiet.

There may also be moments when the healthiest thing you can do is admit:

“I’m struggling right now, and I need support.”

Self-regulation isn’t about making difficult emotions disappear. Instead, it’s about learning how to move through them without allowing them to completely control your thoughts, actions, or decisions.

The Problem With Shame-Based Wellness

If you’ve ever read wellness advice and walked away feeling worse about yourself instead of better, you’re not alone.

That reaction isn’t a personal failure.

And shame doesn’t heal people.

A Realistic Guide to Prediabetes

Hearing the words “you have prediabetes” can feel terrifying.

Suddenly every food choice feels loaded.
Every craving feels like a moral failure.
And the internet quickly turns into a confusing mess of fear, shame, and people telling you to completely overhaul your life overnight.

But here’s the truth:

Prediabetes is common.
It does not mean you’ve failed.
And in many cases, healthy lifestyle changes really can help lower blood sugar levels and reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Not through punishment.
Not through perfection.
And definitely not through starving yourself or becoming obsessed with “clean eating.”

Small, sustainable changes matter more than extreme ones.

How to Declutter Your Mind

How to Declutter Your Mind

There’s a specific kind of exhaustion that comes from having too many thoughts and nowhere to put them. Not big, dramatic thoughts—just the constant background noise. The mental tabs left open. The half-remembered to-do lists. The emotional clutter piling up behind your eyes.

When people say “declutter your mind,” they often mean wake up at 5 a.m., meditate for an hour, drink green juice, and transcend your humanity. That’s not what this is.

This is about making your brain a little quieter. A little roomier. A little easier to live in.

The Soft Girl’s Guide to Surviving Burnout in a Hard World

November 19, 2025 by Angela Louise 2 Comments

You know that kind of tired that sleep can’t fix? That’s burnout — and for soft girls like us, it hits a little differently.
We’re the feelers, the nurturers, the ones who want to show up for everyone (and somehow still look cute doing it). But somewhere between late-night overthinking and early-morning alarms, we forget that softness isn’t weakness — it’s what makes us human.
