Take responsibility for your own learning

Unlike high school, there is no one in college standing over you telling you what to do. Things like getting to class on time, completing assignments, and turning your work in on time will have to be done without guidance from a parent or teacher. If you want to be a successful student being involved in your studies is important. That means actively listening and participating in class. Taking notes and asking questions, don’t be someone who sits in the back of the class and daydreams.

Time Management

Don’t procrastinate or wait until the night prior to complete assignments or projects. Give your self the time to review and develop your ideas. Use a planner to plot out your assignments, test, and events. Create a daily to-do list and prioritize your important task.

Stay Organized

In order to be successful in college, you have to stay organized. Set up a homework routine and a period of time where you focus on starting or completing homework assignments. Try and get everything ready the night prior to class. This means putting together what you’re going to wear to class along with any materials you’ll need for class. Color code and label folders and binders this way each class has its own designated location. Do a clean sweep at the beginning of each week and clean out your backpack and organize your desk to get ready for the upcoming week.

Show up to Class on Time

Make sure that you’re getting to class on time or early. Constantly being late counts against your overall grade and you’re also likely to miss valuable information. If you have morning classes make sure that your getting to bed at a reasonable time so you don’t oversleep. Set an alarm and try not to schedule things before class. That way you arrive on time and ready to work.

Participate

Ask questions when you don’t understand and answer questions during class. Be involved in-class discussions and sit toward the front of the class. Pay attention to your instructors don’t fall asleep or text during lessons. Also, make sure that you’re taking good notes during class. You will learn and retain more information if you actively participate in class.

Form Study Groups

Get together with 2-3 people in your class and form a focused and productive study group. It’s a great way to review the material you learn in class and test your knowledge. You can also go over the material and have a better understanding of the topics discussed in class.

Take advantage of Free Tutors

Schools have programs in place to help their students do well. Take advantage of the resources available to you. A lot of schools of free tutoring programs so don’t let these opportunities go to waste.

Get to know your professors

Talk to your professors let them know your eagerness to learn and willingness to accept and ask for help. Get to know one or two of your professors or faculty members well. They can serve as mentors or references if you need a letter of recommendation for a job or scholarship.
