A Review of Strange Secrets
Synopis: Discover the mystery of the two-headed rose and many more Strange Secrets in this new collection of extraordinary stories by Mike Russell. ‘It can’t be real.’ ‘But it is.’ Strange Secrets invites you to discover the magical and the marvelous. Startlingly inventive and constantly entertaining, these unique, vital, and vividly realized stories will take you to places you have never been before. Strange Secrets is Mike Russell’s third short-story collection.

Strange Secrets by Mike Russell can be described as bizarre, thought-provoking, and satirical. It’s a collection of seven short stories. That discusses topics of the nature of reality, the afterlife, and our individual perceptions of our world. Each story discusses its theme well and prompts the reader to explore them deeply.

Writing Style

Russell’s writing style is simple but paints a clear picture for the reader. His use of humor alleviates the awkward tension of scenes, which adds to the humor of the stories. Making Strange Medicine a fun and engaging read. Russell also uses repetition to enhance the story’s points. It prompts you took think about some core parts of human existence. It’s a bizarre adventure you don’t know how each story is going to end.

Characters

What stuck out to me about the characters was their aura of innocence. Each of the stories in the book had a character with an aura of innocence that was different and pushed the story forward. My favorite characters were Arnold and Maureen in Arnold’s Melting Foot. They’re are realistic and easy to relate to.

Plot

The plots of each story were easy to follow. In a couple of the stories, the plots were vague. Though there were answers to the mysteries, some were confusing. Each story starts in a reality with an easy-to-follow plot before slowly getting weirder and weirder. It’s simple but keeps the reader engaged in the story.

“An elderly man wearing a white suit was dancing a jig in the centre of town. The man had a string tied to each of the fingers and thumb of his left hand, the other ends of which were attached to the head, arms and legs of a small, wooden marionette. The marionette was also wearing a white suit and its face was carved to look identical to that of the man. Whilst the man danced his jig, the marionette stood next to him, perfectly still.” – Mike Russell, Strange Secrets

My Thoughts

It’s a quick read, but it makes you think. Arnold’s Melting Foot was my favorite out of the seven stories. I fully agreed with the moral of the story, we don’t fit into a category to be something.
