4 Visual Novel Horror Games on the Nintendo Switch

Halloween is right around the corner, and there’s no better time to get into a good horror game. Visual novel games aren’t a popular genre but bring something different to the horror video game genre. For some, visual novel horror games may not seem as exciting because they’re not as interactive. Instead of playing as a character who’s running for their life. Your reading through a story, paying close attention to clues, solving puzzles, and making decisions that’ll affect the outcome of the story. And if the story isn’t enough to keep you up at night then the chilling illustrations will. Even though, they’re not as interactive as typical video games. They still immerse the player into the story by relying on visuals, music, and telling a compelling story.

The Nintendo Switch has a variety of games in its library including visual novel horror games. Which means you can take your game on the go. I enjoy curling up in bed with my Nintendo switch and a hot drink on cool fall nights and getting lost in the world of a visual novel horror game. It’s also a good place to hide after a good jump. So here are some visual novel horror games, that you can get for your Nintendo Switch that’ll make for a spooky night.

Spirit Hunter: Death Mark

Death Mark’s gameplay consists of dialogue, choice event, exploration, and battle sequences. It’s centered around life, death, and an urban legend. A kid is spreading rumors around Tokyo’s H City that people who receive a strange mark will die in a cruel death. You play as a middle-aged man who’s marked and suffers from amnesia as a result. You end up in front of a western-style mansion that holds the answers and the way to dispel the curse among other mark bearers. Death Mark is full of dark mysteries, haunting places, and spirits. As your tasked to work with another mark bear to investigate, you’ll learn more about the mark, partner, and the truth behind each spirit.

Spirit Hunter: NG

Spirit Hunter: NG is a squeal to Spirit Hunter:  Death Mark. It’s set five years after Death Mark and is built around new characters and different urban legends and rumors. Even though there are connections and references to the first game. You don’t have to play Death Mark first since NG has an original story. You high school student with a bad attitude. His life changes when he’s dragged into a game by unknown spirits and curses.

AI: The Somnium Files

Kotaro Uchikoshi the writer and director of the Zero Escape series is back with his unique take on the serial killer mystery genre. It also has character design by the Yusuke Kozaki who worked on No more Heros and the Fire Emblem series. Its a neo-noir thriller detective adventure that’ll have you on the edge of your seat. You play as Kaname Date and chase the trail of a mysterious serial killer dubbed “The Cyclops Killer.” It’s a mix of serious and humorous. So it’s a good fit for those who aren’t looking for a scary game.

Raging Loop

Raging Loop takes you on a thrilling ride through the secluded Japanese village of Yasumizu. It’s a mystery with a lot of horror elements. You play as Haruaki Fusaishi who’s lost and finds himself in Yasumizu a small isolated village in the forest. After meeting the cast of characters, Haruaki learns the dark fate of the town and meets a gruesome fate. But instead of staying dead, Haruaki finds himself back on the mountain road a day prior, as if time had just been rewound and retaining his memory of dying but not knowing why.

Staying home and getting comfy with a visual novel horror game on the Nintendo Switch is a great way to enjoy some spooks and scares. But I’d suggest keeping the lights if you decide to play one of the games above. What games would you add to the list? I’m always looking for a good horror game.
