April Wrap-Up
Hello May & Goodbye April

April was way less busy than March for me. I had more free time and was able to read more books and catch up on a couple of Netflix series. Most of the month was spent getting ready for the opening on my online shop but, I did take a trip out to Topeka, KS to see Cirque du Soleil: Corteo. Overall it was a fun and chill month for me. which I needed after my hectic March. So here’s my wrap-up of April and my plans for May.

What I did in April
Topeka Adventure

April Wrap-UpThis past month my husband and I took a trip to Topeka, KS to see Cirque du Soleil: Corteo. I’ve been to Topeka before but only to pick people up from the train station. So this was my first time actually getting to explore and really see the city. It’s a small city with a lot of history we arrived around noon and it was weird how quiet it was. I’m used to crazy hustle and bustle of Kansas City and was expecting to see the streets flooded with people. So it was nice to get a break from that.

Our first stop was The Burger Stand for lunch.  After that, we went to Shama Cake for dessert and headed to the Topeka Expocentre to wait for the show to start. It was a nice day out so we sat outside on the steps on the venue for a few minutes before heading into the venue.

The show was amazing. “Corteo” which means cortege in Italian is a procession, tells a joyous tale of a clown whos laying on his deathbed imagining his own funeral. I know on the surface that might seem sad and dark but, its really beautiful. All the people the clown has known and loved come together to celebrate their friend. It takes place in a carnival-like atmosphere with quiet caring angels watching over it. The music pairs perfectly with the whole show starting off somber as Mau the dreamer Clown is laying in his deathbed. Then it transitions to lyrical and playful as his friends honor his memory. It features 16 mesmerizing acts that’ll have you on the edge of the seat. If it’s making a stop in your city I would recommend checking it out or watching it on DVD.

What I Read & Watched in April

So last month I managed to complete two books, one was apart of my purge list and the other I found on Good Reads. The first book I read was Dark Places by Gillian Flynn. It’s been sitting on my shelf for years collecting dust. I really like Gillian Flynn as an author but after Gone Girl, I needed to read something less dark and dementated before getting into another one of her books. So it sat on my shelf until last month when I decided to read it. And it is just as dark and vile but, still a good read if you don’t mind vile every now and then.

Dark Places 4/5⭐

Dark Places follows Libby Day the sole survivor of a horrific massacre. Her mother and two sisters were brutally killed one winter night, and thanks to her testimony her older brother Ben an alleged satan worshiper was found guilty for their murders. Now, almost 25 years later Libby is out of money that was donated to her by well-wishers over the years and has to find a new source of income. She receives an offer from a group of women obsessed with proving Ben is innocent to re-investigate the murders. She accepts but, as shes investigating the strong belief that Ben is guilty starts to waver.

After I finished reading Dark Places I went searching for another book to read on Good Reads. I found Girl in Pieces which from the synopsis sounded really similar to another book I had read. So I decided to check it out instead of purging another book from my shelf. I’m glad I decided to read Girl in Pieces because I loved it. It’s like a modern-day Girl, interrupted, it’s an emotional reading experience with a writing style that is thick with emotion and draws you atmospheric setting.

Girl in Pieces 4.5/5⭐

Girl in Pieces follows Charlotte Davis a 17-year-old girl who ends up in a facility to help with self-harm. Charlotte has a hard past, but she is trying to put that behind her and get her life together. She had to grow up fast dealing with family issues as well as friend issues. Her best friend tried to kill herself and she feels somewhat responsible for what happened to her.

Once I finished it I decided not to start another book since the month was almost over but watch something on my Netflix to-watch list. So I sat back and watched the Umbrella Academy. A series based on the comics and graphics novels created and written by the lead singer of My Chemical Romance Gerard Way. I enjoyed it and can’t wait to watch season 2 when it’s released. One thing that I really liked about the series was how the characters were relatable with their dysfunctional habits.

Umbrella Academy 5/5⭐

Umbrella Academy is about a group of children born on the same day in 1989 to random, unconnected women, who showed no signs of pregnancy when the day before. Seven of the children are adopted by billionaire Sir Reginald Hargreeves. Who creates the Umbrella Academy and prepares them to save the world. But, the family fractures and they all go their separate ways. Fast forward to the present time, when the six surviving members come together after their fathers passing. They try to work together to solve the mystery surrounding their father’s death. But conflicting personalities and abilities again pull the estranged family apart. They must learn to put their differences aside and work together to save the world from the impending apocalypse.

May Plans

I have a lot of things planned for May. The opening of my shop, my sister is coming to visit and we’re going to a concert, and my husband’s graduation. But, all of that takes place at the beginning of the month. So I’m hopeful that I’ll have time to time to finish some cosplay projects, read, and watch more Netflix. As far as blogging I don’t have any specific plans other than creating content for June. So I can stay a month on ahead on my post. Other than that, I think May will be a fun but busy month. And I’m glad it’s kicking off with the opening on my online shop the Socially Awkward Club. I’ve been working on it for months and I’m glad I’m finally able to share it with all of you.

How was your April? Did you do anything fun? What are your plans for May? Let me know below. 😀
