May Warp-up: The Month Flew by

May flew by for me, so I didn’t get a chance to tackle any of my goals last month. My state started opening back up and the temp job I was working at for the stay at home order asked me to return to work for a few days. So then I rushed to get ready for that and to make sure everything was in order. Even though I didn’t tackle my goals for the month I did check out a state park and made a new cosplay.

Weston Bend State Park

In my area, there are two parks I usually go for nature walks. I like both parks, but it gets boring going to the same place over and over again. So I did some research to see what other parks I could find in my area. And I stumbled upon Weston Bend State Park. It’s about 25 minutes from I live, which isn’t too far. So I woke up early on a Monday morning, drove 25 minutes, and spent a couple of hours exploring Weston Bend State Park.Weston State Park Sign

When I arrived I looked at all the trails and decided which ones I check out. I picked the paved bike trail since most of the trails connected to it and it would loop around back to my car. It was peaceful on the trail all you could hear is the sound of birds and the wind. I took a detour from the paved to trail to check out the tobacco barn. And on my way to the tobacco barn, I found a patch of clovers and decided to hunt for four-leaf clovers. One of my strange hidden talents is finding four-leaf clovers. I found two but didn’t pick them, then made my way to the tobacco barn. Weston State Park Clover

The tobacco barn was used to cure tobacco, and when I went inside it had a faint smell of tobacco. There wasn’t anything inside, and it gave off an eerie vibe but it was also an overcast day. After seeing the tobacco barn, I then made my way back to the paved bike trail. Later on, I ventured off the paved trail again to see the scenic overlook, when I made it to the overlook there was a crowd of people and I got nervous. So I ended up just making my way back to the trail. I spent about two hours walking around the state park, and plan on visiting again in the future and seeing more of it.

New Cosplay Project

With conventions being either canceled or postponed I didn’t feel motivated to work on any cosplay projects. So I took a break from cosplay and worked on other creative projects, but while I was cleaning out my garage I started getting cosplay ideas while sorting through everything. I found a set of old white sheets that I kept instead of throwing away and it reminded of my Muses from the Disney movie Hercules print. Then I decided to start on a new cosplay project.

After bringing the sheets inside and took a look at my print to pick which one of the Muse’s dresses to recreate. I went with Calliope because I thought it’d be the easiest dress to recreate. I also didn’t know that they Muses had names until I looked them up. There are five of them and their names are Calliope, Clio, Melpomene, Terpsichore, and Thalia. Before I started working on the dress, I came up with a plan and drafted up a pattern. Making patterns is my least favorite part when it comes to building a cosplay.

After the long and daunting task of making the pattern, I then traced it on to the sheets, cut out the pieces, and started sewing. I stared with the back of the dress to get the zipper out of the way first. I’m not a fan of adding zippers to clothes. When I first started sewing and learning how to add zippers, I broke three needles and sewed over my finger. But I’ve gotten a lot better with zippers over the years and learned to take my time with them. So when I attached the zipper to the dress I didn’t break and needle or sew over my finger.

Once I finished with the back of the dress I sewed both the front and back pieces together, hemmed it, and added a slight in the front. Then I moved on to making the cape. I’d never make a cape before so I just winged it and in hindsight, a lighter weight fabric would have been better than bed old sheets. My needle ended up breaking and since I’d been working on it for hours. I decided to clean up and return to later. I don’t have much more to do to it and once it’s finished I’ll add to my cosplay portfolio.

Goals for June

I had the intention of working things that I could improve on and getting to things from the previous month but that didn’t work out as planned. But that’s okay there’s always time to improve on things and my garage will probably take longer than a month to declutter. There’s a lot of junk in there. So here’s how my May goals went.

May Goals:

  • Declutter Garage – I started to, but didn’t finish.
  • Work on drawing people – I did some drawing but it wasn’t people.
  • Read two self-help books – I didn’t do any reading.
  • Do yoga twice a week – I did some yoga but not twice a week.

Since I didn’t accomplish any of my goals for May, I’m going to try again this month. My birthday is also this month. So I’m going to make time for a special solo outing or do something fun at home. Even though I didn’t really tackle my goals for May. I still enjoyed the month and I’m looking forward to finishing my cosplay and starting a new one.
